What Is Living “the Simple Life” Really All About?
It seems that as our complex, modern world moves at lightning speed, people are longing to live the simple life. But what does that even mean? It means living a life where we give ourselves permission to slow down and connect more deeply with ourselves and others. Where we create more time to just “be” and do whatever the heck our hearts desire in the moment.
I believe more and more people are desiring a life where kindness reigns and separatism and elitism are non-existent.
A life where the collective priority is giving over greed. Where resources are shared and not wasted. Where it’s considered way cooler to re-use, re-cycle, create and make things, rather than buy, consume and throw away.
Everywhere I turn, there are Facebook groups, books, podcasts and television shows cropping up about how to live more simply. It has become a movement of sorts. The common thread amongst much of this content, however, focuses more on how people can change their outer reality in order to live more simply.
The emphases are all similar. “How to be a minimalist,” “How to be more self sustainable,” “How to live off grid,” “How to work less and consume less,” “How to create better habits,” or “How to stop using technology addictively.”
While all of these provide wonderfully useful tips and may help someone temporarily attain their desired result, it doesn’t address the underlying issues required to live “the simple life.”
Humanity is unraveling due to our distorted and confused priorities. Additionally, more and more technological distractions are compounding the issue.
The human race is emitting a thick and palpable energy of confusion and we are collectively feeling the effects…..the earth is feeling the effects! Something’s gotta give. And it is, because more and more people are awakening to their true, divine nature.
In his book, A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle says,
“We need to understand that heaven is not a location, but refers to the inner realm of consciousness. Earth, on the other hand, is the outer manifestation in form, which is always a reflection of the inner. Collective human consciousness and life on our planet are intrinsically connected.”
My husband, Jeff, and I have been contemplating and experimenting with what it really means to live the simple life. What does it really mean to us and how do we truly embody it? When we close our eyes and really feel the essence of this concept, what is it saying to us?
We both wholeheartedly agree! It’s saying that when we gain more control over our mental environment and purify our intentions and hearts, a shift in consciousness takes place. As this occurs, life automatically becomes less complicated and the things that caused us to feel a need for simplicity in the first place, simply fall away.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t continue to simplify our lives outwardly i.e. consume less, de-clutter, recycle/up-cycle, cultivate our own food and live more sustainably. These are all wonderfully helpful tips that can help to support our inner transformation! However, if we’re not doing the inner work simultaneously, we’ll eventually end up dissatisfied no matter how much “simplifying” we’re doing in the material realm.
Based on my experiences, conversations and observations, I believe that there are some fundamental things that people want to feel more of in their lives:
- Self Love and Acceptance
- Peace & Harmony
- Understanding & Forgiveness
- Acceptance of What is
And ultimately….Freedom, which equals the sum of all of these parts.
When we awaken to these things within ourselves, life begins to feel simpler and simpler.
In other words, when we embody these things, we embody the quintessence of simplicity and the desire for anything more ceases to exist.
This is what living “the Simple Life” is truly all about!
